March has been proclaimed Women’s History Month for almost one hundred years internationally. But from the beginning of time, women have steered the course of our history with steadfast determination. With the dawn of technology, women are now poised to take more of a lead in society.
One of the goals of “1000 Women” is to enable more women, especially those who are impoverished, to take that step into the present. In recognition of these efforts, we have recently been nominated to participate in ExxonMobil and Ashoka’s Changemakers challenge, Women | Tools | Technology: Building Opportunities & Economic Power. Women's History Month is an opportunity for us to recognize the contributions women have made to society, and to honor those who blazed trails for women's empowerment and equality. As women reach their potential in all walks of life, their communities and nation benefit and ultimately prosper.
As we move forward, we must work harder to correct persisting inequalities. Although women comprise over 50 percent of the US population, they hold fewer than 17 percent represent their government on a national level. More than half our college students are female, but when they graduate, they still receive lower pay on average than their male counterparts for the same work.
Our commitment to women's rights does not end here because global women's empowerment is a core pillar of our mission and vision.
We are looking to partner internationally to improve women's welfare through targeted programs in agriculture, nutrition, and health, as well as programs that empower women to contribute to economic and social progress in their communities. Through our program model we are making it easier for women to access to educational materials and to expand economic opportunities for women and girls.
This month, let us carry forth the legacy of our mothers and grandmothers. As we honor the women who have shaped our nation and world, let us remember that it is up to us to write the next chapter of women's history.
